Description:

"The Church of God" is the theme of the 2007 Church of God Heritage Calendar.   The name "Church of God" denotes many congregations in many states in the United States and many countries all over the world.  This calendar features photos of some of these congregations and many important events in the history of the Church of God.

HONORING THE NAME "CHURCH OF GOD"

As we survey the blessings that God has bestowed on the Church of God's worldwide ministries, we can take humble pride in being a part of God's work in the world today.  We should also note that 2007 is the centennial anniversary of our use of the name "Church of God" as the official designation of our movement.

A small band of ministers who had been using the name Holiness Church gathered in a country meeting house at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, January 11, 1907.  The historical record reveals few details of their meeting, but in a "harmonious" decision they agreed to adopt the name "Church of God" based on 1 Corinthians 1:2 and 2 Corinthians 1:1, where Paul wrote "unto the church of God which is at Corinth."  The minutes of our second General Assembly recorded that "perfect unity and harmony prevailed."

Many other names might be used to denote a group of Christians.  But for the Church of God, no other name so powerfully proclaims our mission to be God's church.  Our name is not a claim to be the only people among whom God is working, nor a claim to perfectly reflect the ideal church.  But it is a commitment to continually strive toward that which God calls us to be.  May we too have the passion those 1907 delegates had to be God's church in today's world.
